The benefits of sunshine

Three thousand hours of sunshine a year, which is one of the highest levels of solar radiation in the world, guarantee the benefits of the healthy power of the sun’s rays. Sunlight reduces the number of depressions and has a positive effect on certain skin complaints. It also increases the amount of vitamin D in the body.

The reflection from the sea water and the heat of the sun on the sand increase the blood flow; the pores of the skin open, speeding up the elimination of residues and toxins. Since ancient times, it has been well known that bathing in sand heated by sunlight has a great curative power for those suffering from rheumatism, arthritis, neuralgia and obesity.

When you think of Tenerife, one of the first things that comes to mind must be the fabulous beaches. Dotted all around the coast of the island, these Canarian beaches are always filled with people, whether they love to soak up the sun, take part in water sports or grab a bite to eat at a nearby beach bar.

What about if you want to spend a quiet, relaxing day at the beach away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist resorts – where do you go then? Many people are unaware that Tenerife does in fact have a selection of secluded beaches where you can go to take it easy and enjoy the peace and quiet.

If you’re planning a holiday in Tenerife and want a more tranquil, relaxing beach experience, here is our list of top five secluded beaches in Tenerife.

1. Playa de Los Gavitos

Located just beyond Las Teresitas in Santa Cruz, Playa de Los Gavitos is a small cove with Tenerife’s signature black volcanic sand. This beach is the perfect place to try your hand at water sports – such as surfing and windsurfing – without having to battle for space. You’ll find plenty of kiosks peppered along the coastline offering a great selection of food, drinks and some much-welcome shade from the Tenerife sunshine.

2. Playa Bollullo

Playa Bollullo can be found on the northern coast of Tenerife, just along from Puerto de la Cruz. This beach is only accessible via a challenging single-track road, but if you’re up for the trek, you won’t regret it. Once you’re finished your journey you’ll be rewarded with a stunning black sand beach with rolling waves and a small beach bar. Due to the size of the waves, this beach may be unsuitable for children, but it’s ideal for surfers and those who just want to sunbathe.

3. Playa del Pozo and Playa de Los Patos

If you continue walking through Playa Bollullo, you’ll come across Playa del Pozo and Playa de Los Patos. Due to the extremely secluded location and limited access, these beaches offers no visitor facilities but the wind provides huge waves ideal for surfing and there is sufficient seclusion to relax in peace and quiet. These beaches are two of the most natural and untouched in all the island and are definitely worth a visit if you can handle the trek beforehand.

4. Playa de La Tejita

Although not strictly one of the most secluded beaches on the island, Playa de La Tejita is not usually on holidaymakers’ to-visit lists. Situated in the south of Tenerife, close to the airport, this beach is ideal for those who can’t get enough of wide-open spaces. Playa de La Tejita stretches for over 1.5km and is over 300m wide, meaning you’ll always find the perfect spot for your towel. There is plenty of parking available and a lively beach bar located nearby.

5. Playa El Puertito

Another secluded beach found in the south of Tenerife, Playa El Puertito is located a very short distance away from the bustling holiday resorts of Costa Adeje and Playa de Las Americas. Here you’ll find a tiny fishing hamlet in an idyllic bay where traditional Canarian fishing boats bob up and down in the water. Wind is rarely a problem here, making the beach great for sunbathing or enjoying a dip in the sea.
